In Northern Ireland, there are extensive deposits of lignite which is less energydense based on oxidation (combustion) at ordinary combustion temperatures ( for the oxidation of carbon see fossil fuels). The last deep coal mine in the UK closed on 18 December 2015. Twentysix open cast mines still remained in operation at the end of 2015.
The majority of coal produced in England comes from underground mines; in Scotland, most coal is mined from openpit mines. The two northern coalfields Ballycastle, Co. Antrim and Coalisland, near Dungannon, Co. Tyrone produced poorquality bituminous coal. In 1736 Hugh Boyd, an able and energetic entrepreneur, acquired the rights to the Ballycastle coalmine and, with substantial support from the Irish parliament, developed the town, building a glass furnace, an iron foundry, salt pans, a brewery and a tannery.
